The newborn care profession is largely unregulated in the United States. Anyone can use the title night nanny, newborn care specialist, or postpartum doula without any training, certification, or background screening. For families that means credentials matter. For caregivers it means having a recognized, verifiable certification is the single most important professional investment you can make.

The NAPS Night Doula Certificate is the evidence-based standard for in-home newborn care professionals, the only newborn care specialist certification developed by a nationally operating care network, reviewed by an independent Advisory Board of Registered Nurses and IBCLCs, and tied to a verifiable public registry.
What Is the NAPS Night Doula Certificate?
The Newborn and Postpartum Support (NAPS) Night Doula Certificate is issued by Newborn Care Certified— the educational division of Let Mommy Sleep, the nationally operating newborn care network founded in Washington DC in 2010.
The NAPS credential is:
- The only newborn care specialist certification developed by a nationally operating care network with 15 years of direct field experience
- Reviewed by an independent Advisory Board of Registered Nurses, IBCLCs, and maternal-infant health experts
- Tied to the National Night Doula Registry — a verifiable public directory families and employers can search
- Required across all 26 Let Mommy Sleep territories nationwide
- Awarded a U.S. government contract from 2015 to 2021
- Materials referenced by INOVA Health and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
- Available online in English and Spanish
What Does the NAPS Certification Cover?
The NAPS curriculum was developed by the Let Mommy Sleep clinical team and is reviewed on a scheduled basis by the independent NAPS Advisory Board. Coursework covers:
- Newborn and postpartum care
- Infant safe sleep aligned with AAP guidelines, including Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep certificate
- Breastfeeding basics and feeding support
- Bereavement doula skills
- Home and nursery organization
- Care of twins and higher-order multiples
- Cultural competence
- Safety and first aid basics
- Pelvic floor health
The curriculum reflects 15 years of direct field experience operating a nationally recognized newborn care network, not just academic theory. Every module addresses real scenarios caregivers encounter in the homes of real families.
The Let Mommy Sleep Standard: RN and Specialist Working Together
NAPS-certified newborn care specialists at Let Mommy Sleep don’t work in isolation. During the first week home from the hospital a Registered Nurse provides an in-home postpartum visit; check-ups, newborn wellness assessment, teaching and breastfeeding support. The NAPS-certified specialist then provides ongoing overnight care, with the RN and caregiver staying in contact throughout the family’s engagement. We call this RN-Coordinated Newborn Care, the only care model of its kind offered by a nationally operating newborn care network
This coordinated model means clinical oversight is built into the care system, not bolted on as an afterthought. The case for this kind of integrated postpartum support is documented in The State of Newborn Care, a workforce policy paper published on SSRN in 2026 by Let Mommy Sleep founder Denise Iacona Stern.

How Long Is the Certification Valid?
NAPS certificates are valid for two years. Renewal requires completing continuing education updates reflecting the latest AAP and safe sleep recommendations. Individual continuing education courses are available at Newborn Care Certified and count toward renewal.

Is the NAPS Certificate Recognized Outside of Let Mommy Sleep?
Yes. The NAPS curriculum has been used by nanny agencies, pediatric offices, and CNA programs across the country. It has been referenced by INOVA Health and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Graduates are listed on the National Night Doula Registry which any employer or family can search to verify credentials independently.
How Does the NAPS Certificate Differ From Other Newborn Care Certifications?
Several newborn care certifications exist. The distinctions that matter:
- Developed by an operating network — the NAPS curriculum comes from 15 years of direct field experience, not an academic program with no operational history
- Independent clinical oversight — the NAPS Advisory Board of RNs and IBCLCs reviews the curriculum independently of the organization selling the course
- Verifiable registry — completion results in listing on a searchable public registry, not just a downloadable certificate
- Required by an employer network — NAPS is the only newborn care certification required as a condition of employment across a nationally operating network — Let Mommy Sleep across 26 territories
- Government validated — the curriculum was awarded a U.S. government contract from 2015 to 2021
How to Enroll
The NAPS Night Doula Certificate is available online at Newborn Care Academy. No prior certification or experience is required. Courses are self-paced and available in English and Spanish. Most caregivers complete the full certification within 2 to 4 weeks.
